A slip ring is an electrical connector by which a current carrying stationary wire can transmit power to a rotating device. Mostly it consists of electrically conductive material mounted on a shaft, slip ring would be connected to the rotor or the rotor assembly by means of windings or other electrical connections The slip ring consists of a metal contact which will make contact with the rotating metal ring

The sliding contact which will be established by a brush that presses against the metal ring mostly the brush will look like a wire or a spring with a material attached to the ring. Sometimes two brushes are used and mostly the brushes will be shielded to isolate from high voltage circuits. Transferring power from a stationary to a rotating device it is called a commutator, or electrical rotary joint By using slip rings we can improve the system performance simplify the system structure and it can avoid the wire during the rotation caused by sprain slip rings can effectively transmit Ethernet signals such as USB, RS, CANbus…

Slip ring commutator can be used in any kind of electromechanical system which needs revolution while the power transmission it can make the system operation simpler and it will be useful to get rid of damage prone-wires

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SLIP RINGS AND SPLIT RINGS

• Split ring commutator makes the current change direction in every half rotation while the slip ring only makes the connection between the moving rotor and the stationary stator • Split rings can be used for the DC motors so it can change the direction of the current • Slip rings can be used in an AC motor where the constant current is needed • Slip rings are used in AC generators the brush on the slip rings which maintains a constant connection between the rotating coil and the external circuit

Brush and ring are the two components in a slip ring and the bush is usually made of metal which is used to rub the outside of the rotating metal ring The ring is another component it is the rotating part the number of the rings may vary in slip ring depending on the needs of the device for the better use of slip ring the ring must match the brush and that’s why they are sold as a set and thus the name slip ring
