List of Important Valve installation standards

Valve installations are subject to numerous standards and specifications issued by many supporting organizations. Valve standards are vibrant documents representing engineering practices, variations in market requirements and technological and production process modifications.

These are the list of valve standards:

  • American Petroleum Institute (API) standards

  • ASME

  • Manufacturers Standardization Society – Standard Practices (MSS – SP)

  • INDIAN STANDARDS : Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

American Petroleum Institute (API) standards:

The most common valve design standard for the past 50 years has been the American Petroleum Institute (API) valve standard for refinery use, known today as API 600. The American Petroleum Institute (API) Standards for Some Commonly used Valves are as follows

Standard
Specifications
API 6D Pipe Line Valves, End Closures, Connectors and Swivels
API 6F Recommended Practice for Fire Test valves
API 593 Ductile Iron Plug Valves – Flanged Ends
API 598 Valves Inspection and Test
API 600 Steel Gate Valves
API 602 Compact Design Carbon Steel Gate Valves
API 604 Ductile Iron Gate Valves – Flanged Ends
API 607 Fire Test for Soft Seated Ball Valves

ASME:

ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers) is a nonprofitable organization. ASME provides 600 codes and standards covering many technical areas, such as fasteners, plumbing fixtures, elevators, pipelines, and power plant systems and components.

Standard
Specifications
ASME B16.34
Valves – Flanged, Threaded and Welding End
ASME B16.10 B16.10 lists the face to face dimensions of all flanged and buttweld end valves. Screwed and socket weld end valve face-to-face dimensions are not included in this specification
ASME PTC 25 The main reference document for the testing of pressure relief valves

Manufacturers Standardization Society – Standard Practices (MSS – SP):

The Valve and Fittings Industry MSS is a non-profit technical association organized for industrial growth and enhancement, domestic and global codes and norms for: Valves, Valve Actuators, Valve Modification, Pipe Fittings, Pipe Hangers, Pipe Supports, Flanges, and Associated Seals.

The most Common MSS-SP standards referred for Valves are as follows:

Standards Specifications
MSS – SP – 42: Class 150 corrosion resistant gate, globe and check valves
MSS – SP – 61: Pressure testing of valves
MSS – SP – 67: Butterfly Valves
MSS – SP – 68: High Pressure off seat butterfly valves
MSS – SP – 70: Cast iron gate valves
MSS – SP – 71: Cast iron check valves
MSS – SP – 72: Ball Valves
MSS – SP – 78: Cast iron plug valves
MSS – SP – 80: Bronze gate, globe and check valves
MSS – SP – 85 Cast iron globe valves

INDIAN STANDARDS : Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

Indian Standards cover Dimensional and Material Specifications under the same Standard Number: Some of Piping Engineers ’ frequently referred Indian standards are as follows:

Standards Specifications
