What is Scaffolding? Main part, Safety considerations for scaffolding

What is Scaffolding?

Scaffolding or staging is building equipment (platform) that is made temporarily and is used as a support for labour, materials and tools in every building construction work including maintenance and demolition work.

Safe scaffolding must be provided for all work that cannot be carried out safely by someone who stands on a strong and permanent construction, except if the work can be carried out safely by using stairs.

Scaffolds must be rigid, built of sound materials on good foundations and be well secured to the building or structure. In public places, scaffolds must be well lit or have warning lights fitted at the base.

Basic function of scaffolding:

  • As a safe working platform, workers stand on the platform and do the work easily and safely.

  • As a platform for placing material & logistic needed for the workers to carry out their job.

  • Scaffolds are used as a walking platform and to transport materials.

Main parts in Scaffold arrangement:

scafolding

Mainframe:

This structure serves as the main structure of scaffolding.

Cross Brace:

Functioning as a fastener and an articulator on scaffolding so that scaffolding does not rock and stand upright.

Brace Lock (pen):

Serves as a lock between the main frame and cross brace so that the cross brace can be tied properly. Located on the frame body.

Joint Pin:

Joint pins serve as scaffolding parts connectors, such as connectors between frames.

Jack Base:

It functions as a scaffolding foot that can be lowered to increase the height of scaffolding as desired.

U-Head Jack:

Works as a link between scaffolding with begisting logs. Similar to Jack Base, U-Head Jack can be lowered according to the desired height.

Catwalk/Deck/Platform:

Serves as a foothold between frame scaffolding. Catwalk / Deck / Platform is used in scaffolding as access or accommodation for construction workers.

Coupler:

scaffoldd

Serves as a connector if you want to add reinforcement pipes outside the main parts.

Safety consideration in scaffolding:

  • The safe passage must be provided for the public, Remember blind people, people in wheelchairs, senior citizens.

  • No part of the scaffold must project into the roadway where it may be struck by any vehicle.

  • Lighting regulations must be observed.

  • Safety notices displayed as necessary

  • Strong foundation

  • Overhead cables. electricity, phone cables
